I am kanaka ʻōiwi, originally from Maui, Hawaiʻi, although my family moved to Lopez Island, Washington when I was in middle school. I am completing a double degree in K-12 music education and 5-12 science education with a minor in French. As a McNair scholar, I have had the opportunity to pursue research projects in education and science. My first project, supervised by Dr. Kristofer Olsen, documented the histories of songs used in elementary music classes that originated from blackface minstrelsy, with the goal of better informing teachers of the original context of these songs. I have also completed two undergraduate research programs relating to ecology. I studied bull kelp with Dr. Brooke Weigel at UW's Friday Harbor Labs, and endemic nerite snails with Dr. Peter Marko at UH Mānoa. Upon completing my Bachelor's degrees, I am exploring graduate study in either Indigenous Education or biology/ecology.
