72 Hour Supply Kit
Everyone should prepare a 72 Hour Supply Kit to assist them in the event of an emergency. Not all services and utilities will be immediately available following a large emergency. FEMA estimates that federal response to a large-scale incident could take three days, so it's important you have supplies that will last that long.
You should consider having an emergency kit in your home, apartment or residence hall. If you own a vehicle, you should consider also having an emergency kit in your car.
These are basic items to allow you to endure an emergency situation:
- Water - one gallon per person for each day
- Canned or non-perishable food - don't forget a can opener!
- Flashlights and candles
- Radio (battery or crank charge)
- Extra batteries for radio & flashlight
- Pocket knife or multi-tool
- Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, hand sanitizer)
- First Aid Kit - dust mask & surgical gloves are useful to include
- Blanket - emergency space blanket and normal blankets are both useful
- Prescription medications
- Safety whistle to signal for responders
- Duct tape
- Garbage bags - useful for both waste disposal and patching any leaks in your shelter
- Add anything else you believe would be helpful: perhaps more tools, or a deck of cards and a book to pass the time.
If you need to evacuate during an emergency, take your Emergency Supply Kit with you. Don’t forget: Keys, Identification (MSU ID, Driver’s License, etc.), Wallet/Purse, Money/ Credit Cards, Cell-phone and Charger. For more information, visit Ready.gov's Build a Kit.
