What to Do During a Bomb Threat
All bomb threats are assumed credible until deemed otherwise by law enforcement officials. If you receive a threat of any kind, immediately dial 911 (on a different device if threat is received by phone).
Bomb threats are commonly received by phone, but may also be delivered in person, by email, through written note or other various means.
Bomb Threat Procedures
Bomb Threat Received by Phone:
- Remain calm and keep the caller on the line as long as possible. DO NOT HANG UP, even if the caller does.
- Listen carefully. Be polite and show interest in the call. Try to have the caller
answer the following questions:
- Where is the bomb located (building, floor, room. Etc.)?
- When will it go off?
- What does it look like?
- What kind of bomb is it?
- What will make it explode?
- Did you place the bomb?
- Why?
- What is your name?
- Note if the caller is male or female and any distinctive voice characteristics that may be present (accent, slurring words, key words). Also, listen for background noises (animals, PA system, conversations, street noises, kitchen noises, long distance, etc.).
- If possible, slide a note to a coworker and have them contact 911 while still on the line with the caller. If this is not possible, stay on the line until the call is terminated: DO NOT HANG UP, but instead call 911 from another phone to alert authorities.
- Await instructions from law enforcement. Do not evacuate the building unless directed to do so.
Bomb Threat Received by Mail/Hand Written:
- Immediately call 911.
- Handle note as little as possible.
- Report all details to law enforcement.
Bomb Threat Received by E-Mail:
- Immediately call 911.
- Do not delete the message.
- Report all details to law enforcement.
