Gold Standard Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find a Gold Standard job on campus?
There are many on-campus jobs available, such as working in Residence Halls, Sports Facilities, Culinary Services, Event Services, the Bookstore, Research Opportunities and more.
How to apply:
1. Visit Montana.edu
2. Search "Gold Standard"
3. Click the student bucket, select "student"
4. Complete the Gold Standard Inquiry Request Form
After you submit your inquiry, a Gold Standard representative will reach out with more details.
Why should I get an on-campus job instead of an off-campus job?
In addition to a steady income, on-campus jobs offer flexible schedules and the convenience of not having to commute. That means more time for studying and a better school/work balance. When working on campus, your employers understand that you are a student first. Plus, the connections you'll make are often unmatched by off-campus jobs.
How much will I be paid? Are there bonuses?
Wages vary by job and are paid every other week. Most employers pay $14-$17 per hour, but there is always room for growth. Some jobs, like Grounds or Culinary Services, pay $15-$17 per hour to start. Several Gold Standard employers provide bonuses for exceptional performance, and there are job-specific bonuses, such as Culinary Services employees who receive food/beverage credit on workdays.
How many hours do I work per week?
You can work between 6-20 hours per week and still receive all the Gold Standard benefits.
How is Gold Standard different from work study?
Work study is a government-funded program offered to eligible students with demonstrated financial need. The money earned helps with educational expenses and is usually awarded as part of a financial aid package. Gold Standard is partnered with many departments that offer work study.
How formal are interviews with Gold Standard employers? Do I need my resume?
Show your professionalism while interviewing; wear nice clothes and be courteous. A resume is always a good thing to have as well. If you'd like help preparing for an interview, visit the Allen Yarnell Center for Student Success to talk with a Career Coach. Call 406-994-7627 for an appointment.
How do I balance school and work?
As a student-employee, school always comes first. Communicate with your supervisor, and never feel worried about asking for fewer hours if you need more time to focus on your classes. That is the benefit of working on campus. Your MSU supervisor wants you to be a successful student and will work with your schedule.
What would my work hours look like? Can I have more than one job on campus?
Full-time students (enrolled in 12 or more credits) may work up to 20 hours per week on campus. You may work up to 40 hours per week on campus during school breaks. Part-time students (those taking 5 credits or less) may work up to 40 hours a week on campus. Part-time students (those taking 6 credits or more) may work six hours per week minimum up to 20 hours a week on campus. You may work up to your maximum hours a week, so you can combine work schedules from different positions to get up to your maximum number of hours.
Do I have to work over break?
Working over break is not mandatory, though full-time students can work up to 40 hours per week during break periods.
Is it okay to take time off?
Yes! Prioritize your well-being, whether that's academic or personal. Talk to your employer in advance if you need time off.
Can I get a job if I am an international student?
International students with legal status under federal regulations can work for wages on campus. Talk to an International Student and Scholar Service (ISSS) advisor to get started.
