Sustainable Features

The Student Wellness Center (SWC) was designed and built to enhance whole-person health and being with an eye on environmental wellness. Our facility is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED certified, which requires energy-efficient and environmentally responsible construction. The SWC includes a variety of special features.

Heating and Cooling a Large Facility

  • The SWC and Romney Hall are heated and cooled efficiently by exchanging heat with each other. Both buildings connect to the Romney oval geothermal well field, using underground temperatures of the 700-foot-deep wells to heat and cool the buildings, reducing the use of traditional energy sources.
  • The SWC ventilation and air conditioning systems use heat pump technology to exchange heat in different areas. For example, when fitness areas are being cooled, the extra heat pulled from those spaces heats the pool, reducing energy needs.

Powered by the Sun

  • Roof-mounted solar panels offset power needs for the building.
  • A solar wall on the south-facing surfaces of the building heats outside air and brings it inside for ventilation so that less energy is needed to warm the fresh air.

LED Lighting Our Way

Efficient and occupant censored LED lighting controls are used to optimize natural daylight and reduce energy use when unnecessary.
