Travel Awards
Overview
This award is mainly for undergraduates who are traveling to academic and professional conferences or other events in which students will present or co-present original research or creative works. Awards can also be used to pay registration for virtual conferences that do not require travel.
The USP also encourages students to submit an application to present at the annual National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR). If accepted, the USP helps fund travel and expenses to this event.
These non-competitive grants are awarded on a rolling basis as funds allow, so we encourage you to apply as early as possible.
Eligibility and Deadlines
Our expectation is for students to be enrolled full-time, at undergraduate status during time of travel. Part-time students or recent graduates who have an opportunity to present on research conducted as an undergraduate may be considered on a case-by-case basis, and should obtain prior approval from the USP Program Director (usp@montana.edu).
Note: The USP has reached our funding capacity for this year for our regular student travel awards. Travel awards will be available again in the 2025/26 academic year.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
NCUR Application Deadline: December 6, 2024 (Friday)
Application Requirements
To apply, you must:
- Present or co-present original research or creative works.
- Povide an abstract or project description of your research/presentation.
- Provide proof of acceptance from the conference or event.
- Obtain faculty/mentor approval.
Funding Details
USP travel awards can provide up to $750 to help cover registration and other allowable expenses. Funding is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, so earlier submissions are welcome and may facilitate more timely disbursement of funding. We advise that you submit your application at least 4-5 weeks in advanced of the trip.
The USP will transfer travel award funding to your home/research department for disbursement. Work with your mentor and department to complete a Travel Authorization Form & associated documents prior to your travel.
Students who receive USP travel awards are expected to abide by all applicable travel policies set forth by MSU and their home/research department.
What is Not Funded
In addition to nonallowable expenses as per MSU policy, we do not provide:
- supplemental funding for research that involves travel.
- travel scholarships for study abroad.
However, students who are traveling to conduct research or those who who wish to engage in a significant, independent research project abroad are encouraged to apply for USP research funding.
