MSU Study Abroad Eligibility
All MSU students who wish to study abroad and have their credits transfer back to MSU, must apply through MSU.
The basic eligibility requirements for MSU students applying to study abroad:
- Good MSU Dean of Students Conduct standing
- Good MSU Academic standing
- Minimum GPA 2.5. Other GPA requirements vary depending on program type
- Successful completion of two semesters at MSU-Bozeman.
- Active enrollment at MSU the semester applying to study abroad.
HOW TO APPLY
Research Programs to Find the Best Fit.
Click on the "Programs" button above to learn about the various program types offered at MSU. Some questions to consider:
- Where do you want to study abroad?
- Do you want to study courses in your major or minor?
- Are the courses you are interested in offered at the host university?
- How many credits do you want to take?
- How long do you want to be abroad?
- What is your financial situation? Are you in-state, or out-of-state? Do you have scholarhips or use financial aid?
- Do you have an updated passport?

Create an MSU Study Abroad Account
Your MSU Study Abroad materials including your application, will be located in this user account also referred to as, "My Global Connections." To create an account, scroll to the bottom of the page and select "Login" or go to the Study Abroad Login Page, then select "New User."

Advising offers students an opportunity to communicate their study abroad plan and bring their questions or concerns to our team.
Decide which Term to Study Abroad and Program Type.
Please email studyabroad@montana.edu with this information. Once we hear from you, we can generate an MSU Study Abroad application that corresponds with your program type and academic term.
Complete the MSU Study Abroad Application
The MSU Study Abroad Application process looks different for each program type. However, they all include:
- Study Abroad interview
- Non-refundable fees
- Official Transcript
- Passport
Our team takes the application process seriously. We look for quality and sincere interest when evaluating study abroad applications.
Students who wish to study abroad with ISEP or any Direct Enroll/Fee-based program typically need to complete a separate application alongside their MSU Study Abroad Application.
Complete Pre-Departure Requirements
Per MSU International Travel & Safety Compliance policies, all MSU students who wish to study abroad must complete a Study Abroad Pre-Departure Orientation and Travel Health & Safety Class. The dates for these requirements vary, but they typically occur after students have completed Step 5.
Other requirements include:
- Visa
- MSU Course Approval Form
- Travel Insurance Enrollment
- Financial Aid Forms (optional)

Re-Entry to U.S and MSU
Students who return from studying abroad will need to ask their host university or host program to send their abroad transcript to MSU. The mailing address is:

Students who plan to take classes at MSU after their semester abroad will need to register for courses while abroad.
