The groups are peer-led, structured, and a fun way to meet others and build connections.

MSU Writing Center Support

Writing in graduate school requires different skills and strategies than writing as an undergrad. Students are
undertaking long-term research, often for the first time, and communicating it in discipline-specific ways
to both academic and professional audiences. The Writing Center can support graduate students as they learn how
to adjust their writing to fit these different contexts and how to sustain a long-term writing and revising
process.

The Writing Center offers support such as:

  • Tutoring: MSU Writing Center tutors are fellow MSU students who come from a variety of academic disciplines and personal backgrounds. In other words, they are writers too.
  • Focus Fridays: Every Friday morning, the Writing Center invites graduate students to write from 9 am
to noon in the Wilson Hall Writing Center.
  • Groups: Writing groups are four to five students who meet weekly to give each other feedback on drafts.
Groups offer accountability and support during the writing process.
  • Writing Retreats: The Writing Center hosts a weekend workshop and writing time for students
working on their thesis or dissertation. Students will have dedicated time to write and an opportunity to
learn about their own writing process.
  • GTA Consultations: Our staff can help GTAs learn to effectively respond to student writing.
  • Thesis or Dissertation Mentoring: Providing feedback to students working on a thesis or dissertation is
challenging. Our staff can discuss ways of managing that process and mentoring academic writers.
