Graduate Council Agenda Items:

 

 

McLeod opened the meeting with a special thanks to all Deans and Department Heads who accepted his invitation to take time out of their busy schedule to attend the Graduate Council meeting.

 

 

 

Item 1: Approval of September minutes

 

Bowers requested a clarification in the year limit for master’s credits for a student’s program of study. 

 

 

 

Motion:  McNeely moved to accept the September 19 minutes with the clarification of the years for master’s credits.  Bowers seconded.

 

                   Vote:  Unanimously passed

                       

 

Item 2:  Master of Science in Health and Human Development, Youth Development option

 

 

 

Tabled for future meeting.

 

 

Item 3:  Master of Science in Health and Human Development, Gerontology option

 

 

 

Tabled for future meeting.

 

 

 

Item 4:  Discussion of the use of portfolios in graduate degree programs

 

·         For course credit

 

·         In lieu of the comprehensive examination

 

 

 

Item 5:  Discussion of advising and mentoring needs for students in “professional” programs.  Could the number of members on students’ committees be reduced to one or two for professional programs?  Do we need to identify MSU’s professional graduate programs?

 

 

 

McLeod asked that Item 4 and Item 5 be combined for discussion.  The graduate council and invited guests discussed portfolios and professional programs.

 

 

 

 

Action:  McLeod asked the Graduate Council to consider the definition of a professional program.

 

 

 

 

 

The next Graduate Council meeting is scheduled for 12:00 p.m., November 18thin the President's Conference Room (MT Hall 103).
