I. Call to Order                                                                                                                                                                            President Waded Cruzado

President Cruzado called the meeting to order at 8:30am.

 

II. Approval of Minutes for August 14, 2019

Terry Leist moved to approve the minutes; Dan Stevenson seconded and the minutes were approved unanimously.

 

III. University Wide Information/Announcements

President Cruzado shared the exciting news that Betsy Hayes was born to Maggie and Brian Hayes on August 14, 2019. 

Dr. Jason Carter will begin in the next few weeks as the Vice President of Research, Economic Development and Graduate Education.   President Cruzado applauded the MSU community for their help with the search that began in April.

V. Old Items


A. Credit Card Policy

No comments were received. This was moved from a policy to a procedure so it can be updated more often.  Kellie encouraged approval and the credit card policy passed unanimously

No comments were received, and the international travel policy passed unanimously.

 

VI. New Items

A. Breastfeeding Policy Revision

Kellie Peterson shared that the regular review of the following three policies have led to making amendments to the policies to improve, clarify and update the policies: the Breastfeeding policy, the Volunteer Policy Revision and the University Sponsored Programs for Children and Youth Policy Revision.

Dean Matt Caires asked question of breastfeeding while in the classroom.

Dean Kenning Arlitsch asked how many family care rooms are on campus.

VII. Informational Items

A. Long Range Building Program (LRBP) Process                                                                                                                           Dan Stevenson, Associate Vice President, University Services

Dan Stevenson shared HB 0553 – restructures LRBP to two lists: major repairs and capital development.  The LRBP process is a continuous cycle, each new cycle begins in May of odd years. 

President Cruzado shared the four campus LRBP meeting today being held in the Montana Room as it’s a public meeting.

B. Know Your MSU: From Farm to Campus                                                                                                                                   Kara Landolfi, M.S., Farm to Campus Coordinator, MSU Culinary Services                                      

Kara informed University Council that Culinary Services provides all the food on campus.  $2 million spent on MT sourced foods in FY2019.  Almost 25% of overall food budget.  Over 100 local vendors. They have a close partnership with College of Ag where they have 30 steers and 60 lambs a year.  They attended 15 fairs this summer to obtain pigs from 4-H auctions. Grains and lentils, legumes and breads are also locally sourced.

  • Provost shared provost lecture series on Sept 17 with Dr. Kristen Intemann. 26 is the 2nd annual teaching and learning faculty event. 
  • Susan Wolff shared update on 8-week advantage kicking off. LPN program offered in a hybrid program,
  • Chancellor Kegel shared improvements on buildings are underway at MSU Northern to get ready for the academic year. Homecoming is on Sept. 28 and they’ve announced phase 1 of the stadium project.
  • MSU Billings will break ground in next 30 days for the Yellowstone health allied building.
  • Terry Leist shared fitness structures are up and they will open October 1.
  • ASMSU rolled out software for platform to keep track of memberships and nonacademic activities.
  • Royce shared he’s happy to be back. Shakespeare in the Parks cast rounded out their season and Royce took them to dinner.  October 4 Shakespeare in the schools begins.  
  • Hike and Read will take place for the Honors College and freshman research symposium.
  • $1 million endowment for the Hilleman program shared by Dr. Chris Kearns.
  • Renne Library worked on updating space this summer. Collections of papers brought in Greater Yellowstone and Frank Craighead.
  • Dean Gunnink shared that they are moved into Norm Asbjornson Hall.
  • Romney Repurposing Kickoff is on Friday, Sept. 6, 2019.
  • Michael Trotter shared cloud upgrade.
  • Craig Ogilvie appreciated warm welcome over the past month
  • Leslie Schmidt thanked 3 task forces on research.
  • Stephanie Gray, Gallatin College, shared women in welding course on Saturdays.
  • Gold Rush this Saturday. Faculty and staff have opportunity to purchase discounted tickets per Leon Costello.  Phase 1 fundraising nearing completion. 
  • MSU All Staff Council – Glen Steinhoff introduced himself and shared nominations were received.
  • Chair of Faculty Senate, Eric Austin, grateful to be here and Faculty Senate will work to move some proposals forward to be sent to OCHE.
  • MOR this summer broke attendance records. School programs began last year.  Schools may attend MOR with students for free each school year.  Haunted mountain theater is Oct. 25-27.
  • Ariel Donohue shared American Indian Heritage Day on Sept. 27.
  • MSU Extension speaker next week in Inspiration Hall on rural communities.
  • MAES field days were successful. Ranch management program hired the program director and the program is officially open. 
  • Gold Rush huckleberry lemonade makes its debut today.
  • 28 projects have been completed over this summer with CPDC.
  • Kellie shared thankfulness to incorporate feedback on policies.
  • Professor Charles Falco, Science Matters lecture series on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

NOTE:  The next University Council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 2nd, 2019, from 8:30 AM – 10:00 AM.
