I. Call to Order
President Waded Cruzado
President Cruzado called the meeting to order at 8:30 AM.
II. Approval of Minutes for April 3, 2019
President Cruzado called for approval of the minutes. Michael Babcock moved to approve the minutes; Dean Adams seconded and the minutes were approved unanimously.
III. University Wide Information/Announcements
A. Year in Review
President Waded Cruzado
President Cruzado thanked Tracy Ellig for being “a champion” during the Legislative Session this year. After five sessions we received approval for the funding of Romney Hall.
President Cruzado showed a year in review slideshow, illustrating highlights from the 2018-2019 academic year.
IV. Public Comment
Tory Johnson, President of the Interfraternity Council, and Rachel Kepl, President of the Panhellenic Council, shared concerns about MSU’s Facility Use Manual that could inhibit their philanthropy work. They intend to work with ASMSU, Legal Counsel and the Dean of Students to create some amendments to this policy over the summer with the goal of introducing the amendments in the fall.
Steve Durbin from Gallatin Valley Community Radio and the staff of KGVM Bozeman, came to share comments regarding the Amendments to the Film and Photography Policy. Mr. Durbin recently recorded an event at MSU recently and has learned that in the future, with these new amendments, he would not be able to do this under the short notice that he had for this particular event.
V. Old Items
A. Amendments to the Film and Photography Policy
Kellie Peterson, Legal Counsel
Kellie Peterson brought forth the changes that were made to the film and photography policy to include Audio Recording. The additions include permission from the presenter to record. This amendment will also allow for the event to be properly supplied with power and other needs given the advance notice. Kellie recommended the adoption be delayed to July 1, 2019, in order to for University Communications to develop a plan on how to contact presenters for permission.
President Cruzado asked for questions. She also recommended a “friendly amendment” to amend the title to include audio recording and remove the attention of film and photography in order to not confuse this with the academic side of the house.
President Cruzado called for a vote of the policy. The policy passed unanimously.
VI. Informational Items
A. Know Your MSU: Montana Shakespeare in the Parks (MSIP)
Kevin Asselin, Executive Artistic Director
Kevin Asselin shared that MSIP is an outreach program of the College of Arts and Architecture at MSU. It serves a five-state region (MT, ID, WY, ND, WA). He shared meaningful quotes from the communities that have enjoyed performances of MSIP.
Montana Shakes is their elementary school program, which includes touring. This program is in its 10th season, over 60 schools across two states. They show 35-minute original plays and nine workshops.
In addition, they have added “The Black Box Series”. This utilizes the Black Box Theatre at MSU to bring additional performances.
MSIP has seven sources of funding, including: Performance Fees, Individual Giving, Corporate Sponsorship, Private Foundations, Government Grants, MSU, Fundraisers and In-kind housing.
Dean Adams thanked Kevin for his leadership and what he is doing to build the program.
President Cruzado thanked Kevin for MSIP’s extraordinary work – and it’s true emulation of the Land-Grant Mission.
B. Choosing Promise: Update on Strategic Plan Activities
Chris Fastnow, Director, Office of Planning & Analysis
Chris Fastnow reminded the Council that MSU has adopted its Strategic Plan in November of 2018. Dr. Fastnow emphasized that all units should be working on strategic planning alignment.
VII. Updates
President Cruzado asked for updates from Provost Mokwa and the CEO’s from our other campuses.
Susan Wolff, CEO of Great Falls College, shared information about their “Night Out for Science.” She also thanked Tracy Ellig for his help at the Legislature. Susan brought forth a “Campus News” handout.
Dan Edelman shared that he just completed his first year at MSU Billings. He also shared a “Buzz Bulletin” for the University highlighting updates. MSU Billings had one Goldwater Scholar this year.
Greg Kegel shared a printed report outlining celebrations from April, including their Scholarship Awards Celebration. Greg shared his gratitude to Tracy for his work in the Legislature.
