Coverage Types for State-Owned Vehicles

The University has two types of auto insurance for state-owned vehicles: liability and physical damage.

  • Liability coverage (required by law) is provided since MSU is a state agency.
  • Physical damage coverage MUST be elected by the vehicle-owning department.
  • The form below must be completed for all newly purchased MSU vehicles.  Also, use this form to drop insurance coverage for a vehicle no longer owned by MSU.

Long-term rentals, greater than 30 days also require using the physical damage form to get coverage.

What drivers are covered?

Authorized drivers – faculty, staff and state employees (including student employees) using a state-owned, rented, loaned, or leased vehicle for university business are covered.  This is described in the state ARM Rule State Vehicle Use /Authorized Drivers and Uses.

The state’s self-insured auto liability coverage does not include uninsured motorist, underinsured motorist or medical payments coverage.   The first two are not applicable, and the latter is covered by by Workers’ Compensation in the case of injury in an auto accident while on university business.
