Hazardous Waste Management
Process Overview:
- Ensure workers have required training prior to beginning operations that may generate hazardous waste;
- Review all work before work begins to understand what hazardous waste will be generated;
- Arrange for appropriate SRM-provided waste containers prior to generating waste;
- Complete container labels to ensure waste is properly characterized;
- Store waste containers properly, with secondary containment and lids closed;
- Complete SRM Waste Pick-up Form when ready for disposal.
- Please allow for a two-week pick-up time unless other arrangements are made.
Packaging:
SRM provides approved waste containers for operations generating hazardous waste. Please contact the Hazardous Materials Manager at X7803 for assistance.
Important:
- Do not overfill containers. Please leave at least 2” of unfilled space in containers.
Labeling:
- Waste containers must be SRM-provided and must have an SRM-provided label with the words “Hazardous Waste” on the label.
- Contents must be listed on the label, including water. The label has space for constituents and estimated quantities.
- Use conventional names for chemicals – shorthand and symbols do not meet regulatory requirements.
Contents:
Solvent waste is typically segregated the following way:
- Halogenated compatible solvents (i.e. Chloroform)
- Non-halogenated solvents
- Water miscible (i.e. Acetone)
- Non-water miscible (i.e. Hexane)
- Caution
- Do not mix incompatible materials;
- Do not mix organic with inorganic waste;
- Mercury waste must be segregated; and
- Acids and bases must be segregated.
Please contact the Hazardous Materials Manager with any questions at X7803.
Universal Waste:
Universal Waste such as batteries, pesticides, Mercury Containing Equipment, or Fluorescent Lamps (bulbs/tubes), should be disposed through the E-Waste program. Please contact the E-Scrap Coordinator for assistance at X5678.
