UIT Data Center HVAC Infrastructure Upgrade: AJM Johnson Hall
Description of Request
Submitted By: University Facilities Management, Engineering & Utilities
One of the University’s Data Centers is located in the basement of AJM Johnson Hall, rooms 033 & 037. This data center needs upgraded cooling equipment, which requires additional square footage in the form of mechanical space. An existing mechanical space in 037A is too small to accommodate the additional infrastructure, which is to include condensing units, pumps and other equipment for a water-cooled in-row AC. Therefore, the Engineering & Utilities division of University Facilities Management is requesting the use of 2-3 additional rooms, which will be determined during the design process. Options include Rooms 041, 46, 46A, and 051B which currently serve as graduate student space and 051A which is a lab service/storage area. To offset the loss of graduate student space, the project will provide for furniture upgrades and lite room improvements in other graduate student spaces on the hall. By increasing utilization to align with the space standards set forth in the Space Management Policy the project will not only account for the lost spaces but provide a net increase in graduate student seats. Additionally, room 040 will be renovated into a shared kitchenette space, which will be available for use by all graduate students and faculty located in the basement. This will create efficiencies by eliminating this use from multiple individual spaces.
Resolution
Date: June 2, 2023
Space Management Committee has recommended using the rooms adjacent to the existing mechanical room, rooms 041, 051A, and 051B. However, if through the design process it is determined that those rooms are not appropriate, or if additional space is needed, the requester will modify the request and return to committee for evaluation.
