Smithsonian Research Group: Molecular Bioscience Building
Description of Request
Submitted By: Alison Harmon, VP for Research, Economic Development & Graduate Education
MSU has entered into an agreement with the Smithsonian that will begin in the Fall of 2023. As part of the arrangement, the Smithsonian will provide mentorship and support for MSU graduate students by providing two graduate stipends per year in exchange for space for Smithsonian employees and researchers. There will also be some opportunities for collaboration on grants.
Short-term space, including a lab, and two offices/lab support areas, has been identified in MBB 232-234, which are functional in their current state and would provide immediate space that will allow for a fall start. This space would be utilized on an interim basis while the long-term space is being renovated. Long-term space proposal is for MBB 240, 241 and 242. Currently, the lab in 242 is filled with storage items and is not functional as is, and would require the space to be emptied, and lab benches and other fixtures to be installed. Renovations will include updating cabinetry, counter tops, additional sink installation, and floor replacement in damaged areas. Additionally, there is a door between room 240 and 234 that would be need to be removed and closed off, and the office in room 241 would also need to be walled off from room 234, with a new door installed which would create access into the lab in 242. An established plant fund will be used cover the renovation costs.
