Academic Standing and Summer Term Enrollment

 

Due to an overlap in Spring semester final grade posting and the beginning of Summer term, MSU is not able to update academic standing prior to the start of Summer term coursework.  Undergraduate students on Suspended status at the end of a Spring term will be permitted to enroll in up to 6 credits of coursework during the entire Summer term.  

Students with an active suspension status that would otherwise prevent their enrollment in Summer term coursework must file a suspension appeal to enroll in Summer term coursework. The University Scholastic Appeals Board will review and render a decision on the appeal.

All course pre-requisite requirements remain in place for the Summer term and must be satisfied in order to remain in coursework. In the event a pre-requisite has not been satisfied, a retroactive drop of the course, without a W, will be used to unenroll the student.

Academic Standing is updated after every term. Unsatisfactory academic performance during the Summer term will not advance students to academic warning, suspension or an additional suspension.

 

The timeline for grade processing at the end of Spring 2023 is as follows:

Term ends Thursday, May 11th.

Summer Session begins Monday, May 15th

Final course grades due to Registrar on Tuesday, May 16th.

Official grades from Spring 2023 are anticipated to be posted on or by Monday, May 22nd. 

Notification of academic status will be communicated the week of May 22nd. 

 

Students with Academic Probation Status

Students on Academic Probation after Spring 2023 term will be communicated with using established procedures. After notification of probation status by the Office of Academic Affairs, AYCSS will contact students to encourage participation in established Fall 2023 offerings. Outreach regarding tutoring and/or support services available during Summer 2023 term could also be communicated by AYCSS. Students on Academic Probation who earn a term GPA less than 2.0 in Summer 2023 will remain on Academic Probation

 

Students with First Suspension Status

Students suspended for the first time after Spring 2023 will be permitted to remain enrolled in Summer 2023 coursework. Students on first suspension who earn a term GPA less than 2.0 in Summer 2023 will remain in the same academic status (i.e., not receive a second suspension). Consistent with current requirements, students will be required to participate in Second Wind to enroll in Fall 2023 coursework.

 

Students with Two or More Suspensions on Record

Students with two or more suspensions on record after Spring 2023 will be permitted to remain enrolled in Summer 2023 coursework. They will be required to file a suspension appeal with the University Suspension Appeals Board to enroll in Fall 2023 coursework. If no appeal is filed or the appeal is unsuccessful, the suspension status will remain unchanged from the Spring 2023 status.

 

Students with an active suspension status, one that would prevent them from registering for Summer 2023, will need to file a suspension appeal with the University Suspension Appeals Board to enroll in Summer 2023 coursework (this is no change in current process).

 

Exception to open course enrollment during Summer 2023- Pre-requisite courses.  A student could be enrolled in a Summer 2023 course where they did not successfully complete a required pre-requisite(s).  A retroactive drop of the course, without a W, will be used to unenroll the student.

 

Students in Good Standing who earn a term GPA less than 2.0 in Summer 2023 and have a cumulative GPA below 2.0 at the end of summer will be classified using established guidelines for the Fall 2023 term.

 

Students Who Do Not Complete Summer 2023 in Good Academic Standing will be referred to the Allen Yarnell Center for Student Success to receive appropriate supports/advisement for Fall 2023.
