Optical Remote Sensor Laboratory (ORSL)
Welcome to the Optical Remote Sensor Laboratory (ORSL) at Montana State University! Under the direction of Dr. Joseph Shaw, we develop optical systems and methods for studying the natural environment. We have expertise in the design, development, calibration, and operation of radiometric and polarimetric lidar and imaging systems. From infrared and polarization imaging of clouds to laser detection of fish or drone-based spectral imaging of rivers and farms, we invent and implement optical remote sensing methods to help answer scientific questions while solving fascinating engineering challenges.
