Dr. Henrietta Mann
Dr. Henri Mann is a Cheyenne enrolled with the Cheyenne-Arapaho Tribes and she is
the founding President of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribal College. Dr. Mann was the
first individual to occupy the Endowed Chair in Native American Studies at MONTANA
STATE UNIVERSITY, BOZEMAN, where she is Professor Emeritus and continues to serve
as Special Assistant to the President. For the greater part of twenty-eight years,
she was employed at the University of Montana, Missoula where she was Director/Professor
of Native American Studies. She also has taught at the University of California, Berkeley;
Graduate School of Education at Harvard University; and Haskell Indian Nations University
located in Lawrence, Kansas. In addition, Dr. Mann has served as the Director of the
Office of Indian Education Programs/Deputy to the Assistant Secretary for [the Bureau
of] Indian Affairs. She also was the National Coordinator of the American Indian Religious
Freedom Act Coalition for the Association on American Indian Affairs.
In 1991, Rolling Stone Magazine named Dr. Mann as one of the ten leading professors
in the nation. She was one of seven recipients of the State of Montana Governor’s
Humanities Award in 2001. She joined Chairman Earl Old Person of the Blackfeet Nation
in delivering the Montana Tribal Nations Address to the Joint Session of the Senate
and House of the Montana 57th Legislative Assembly in February 2001. In 2008 she received
the Lifetime Achievements Award from the National Indian Education Association. The
University of New Mexico honored her with the 2008 Bernard S. Rodey Award for her
leadership, vision, and inspirational guidance in Native American education. She has
published a book Cheyenne and Arapaho Education: 1871-1982. She has been an interviewee
and consultant for several television and movie productions which include In the White
Man’s Image, How the West Was Lost, Paha Sapa: Struggle for the Black Hills, The West,
and Last of the Dogmen. Dr. Mann has lectured throughout the United States including
Hawaii, and in Mexico, Canada, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Spain,
The Netherlands, and Belgium.
