Directions

All drivers living in the Bozeman area for more than 60 days / two months must take the driver license exam at the local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and pass a road driving test. Study booklets for the test may be found at https://dojmt.gov/wp-content/uploads/Montana-Driver-Manual.pdf.

Driver licenses for international students will be issued for the remainder of the approved duration of stay, as indicated by the program end date shown on the I-20 or DS-2019. To make an appointment, visit www.dojmt.gov/driving and click Appointment Scheduling to determine the availability of appointments at the Bozeman driver licensing station.

Driver license testing appointments will take place at the following location:

Department of Motor Vehicle Office
2005 Gilkerson Drive, Suite B

Testing hours: 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

On the day of the driver license appointment, be sure to have your passport, I-20 or DS-2019, I-94 and proof of local address (i.e. a current rental agreement, bill, letter from the bank, etc. sent to a current and correct mailing address).

The cost for a driver license is determined based on the length of time a driver license will be valid, and will be calculated at a rate of $5.00 per year (the length of driver license validity for international students will expire upon the expiration of the student's documented legal presence in the US, as shown on the I-20 or DS-2019).

During the testing appointment you can expect a written examination, a vision test, and a driving test (the vehicle used for the driving test must be provided by the person taking the test, and must also have proof of valid vehicle liability insurance coverage).

State of Montana Identification Card

Although not required, we recommend that students and scholars who are not planning to drive consider getting a Montana ID card. With this ID card, the student will not have to carry their passport around and can prove their identity at anytime.

Montana ID cards can be obtained at the Motor Vehicle Department, following a similar protocol to that listed above, and for a cost of $8.00. On the day of the scheduled appointment, student will need to have their passport, I-20 or DS-2019, I-94 and proof of a local address (i.e. a current rental agreement, bill, letter from the bank, etc. sent to a current and correct mailing address).
