Faculty Senate Agenda

Call to Order: Chair Richards called the meeting to order at 3:10pm and a quorum was present.

Note: there are some units with vacancies. Chair Richards will contact those departments with vacancies.

Approval of minutes: motion to approve, Jim Meyer history, Michael Brody seconded. No opposed. One abstention. Minutes approved.

Welcome to Senators by Chair Richards. Reminded senators of the purpose of FS and mission as stated in the bylaws. Introduction of Chair Elect Brett Walker

Message from President Cruzado – ­Welcome Senators to Fall Semester. Update on 125^th Celebration, spotlight College of EHHD. Announced new Dean & Director appointments and reminder for the Dedication of the Norm Asbjornson Hall Dec 13, 2018

New Business – Presented by Chair Richards

Reminded Senators of Workflow process:

• Proposal Presented to Faculty Senate (First Reading) and posted on the FS webpage.
• Two week period for comments and analysis.
• Returns to Faculty Senate for discussion and/or action.
• It is assumed that members of faculty senate have read the proposal, supporting materials and engaged the unit that they represent.
• *New courses presented to Senate and then voted on in Steering Committee the following week

2020 and 2021 Calendar - Tony Campeau, Registrar

Chair Richards distributed calendar and explained key.

• Tony Campeau presentation of calendars. Explained philosophy of start, end dates. NCUR led to modifications for 2020.
• Feedback and recommendations. Questions? Discussion ensued.
• Please share with colleagues. Concerns, let Chair and Tony Campeau know. Reminder that this will be an action item in two weeks

New Courses -2 new undergrad, 5 grad courses

• HORT 202: Landscape Studio II
• BFIN 317: American Financial Institutions
• ANSC 513: Advanced Forage Production
• ARNR 505: Ruminant Microbiology
• ARNR 527: Livestock Mineral Nutrition
• EMEC 540: Biomechanics of Human Movement
• MEDS 595: Research Methods
• Reminder that courses are presented in Senate with information on website. Please check and read. Courses will be voted on during the Steering Committee meeting

New Program: DSLI-MS: Dietetic Systems Leadership

• Current licensure requirements - BS degree with coursework approved by accrediting body (ACEND), MSU offers the Didactic Program Dietetics (DPD); Complete supervised dietetic internship (MDI); Pass national examination 
• Upcoming changes in licensure requirements specify an MS degree
• Proposed program: primarily online (39 cr), of which 5 new courses are proposed. Program will enroll 24 students per cohort. Year 1 consists of online coursework; Year 2 includes an on-campus summer course plus the existing MDI
• Resources: New courses utilize existing faculty (in-load) or with summer compensation. Any NTT instructors will be Registered Dietician Nutritionists. New resource: Graduate coordinator (0.5NTT / 0.5 Staff). Program leverages existing resources and expertise in Nursing and HHD
• Emphasis in systems thinking and an interprofessional team-based approach to patient health
• Questions were deferred to Coleen Kaiser, Director, MT Dietetic Internship. Discussion ensued.
• Chair encouraged the senators to share with their departments and will revisit in two weeks. Please send questions, comments and concerns to Chair.

Program Change: FMCS-MS: Family and Consumer Sciences Online Option

• Proposal for online version to accommodate working professionals across MT. Allow attainment of degree in place. Supplements exiting MS degree in Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS).
• Rationale for online program is that it will serve those who have provisional licensure to practice in this area need MS degree for permanent licensure. These include FCS Extension Agents hired with BS degrees, Middle School/High School Teachers requiring appropriate content knowledge for position.
• Only MS in FCS in State of Montana. Courses include those already taught online. Some Broadcast via Academic Technology & Outreach (formerly Extended University). Mitch Vaterlaus– HHD, was available for questions. No questions raised.

• Welcome reception for new faculty and staff with Faculty Senate, 4:30-6 pm today in the Romney Oval

• VP of Research and Economic Development. Renee Reijo Pera - Report of Research coming out next week. Keep an eye out for it. Questions should be addressed to her office. Report will be sent out to faculty via FS Chair.

Candidate presented by Honorary Degree Committee Chair, Bridget Kevane. Thomas Gedeon moves to approve, Julie Ruff seconded. Unanimously endorsed

Adjournment - James Meyers motioned, seconded Tomas Gedeon. Chair adjourned at 4:10
