Opioid Use Disorder Awareness & Education Program for Rural MT

Last year, the state crime lab saw fentanyl-linked fatal overdoses increase more than 1,100 percent (from 4 in 2017 to 49 in 2021).

· From Jan 2022–May 2022 the lab confirmed 34 fentanyl-related deaths.

· Unintentional drug overdoses increased by 39% from 2019-2020.

· Montana’s opioid overdose death rate almost tripled from  2017-2018 to 2019-2020

ASSESS COMMUNITY NEEDS:

  • 72% of 2018 MSU Extension statewide survey respondents would be likely to share information about the dangers of opioid use with their age-appropriate children. 

    2021 MSU Extension focus group participants agreed,  

  • Children need to know more about the effects opioids and stimulants have on their body and mind.

  • Prevention requires collaborating with, and providing accurate knowledge to, children.

  • Information about proper disposal of medications needs to reach children.

  • Teaching ourselves and others about substance misuse is a collective responsibility.

MEETING COMMUNITY NEEDS SINCE 2018:

  • MSU Extension has provided Technical Assistance Training on opioid misuse to 269 people from 33 counties and 9 tribal communities, ​has ​supported five Tribal Opioid Misuse Strategic Planning sessions, and ​has gathered opioid information from ten community focus group sessions. ​

Since September, 2020 MSU Extension has distributed 7,403 
Deterra Medication Disposal Pouches and over 20,000 opioid awareness and 
educational materials to 51 counties and 9 tribal reservations in Montana
