Dear 4-H Families,

Summer is finally here and with it comes many activities to keep us busy! June will prove to be a very busy month with 4-H Camp, County Events and many more activities and workshops.  Please take a minute to review the newsletter for all the great activities that will be offered. If you need more information on any of these events, please feel free to contact the office.

We will be short staffed in the office for the foreseeable future as Carleigh’s last day was the May 20th. With that being said there may be times that the Baker office will need to be closed as staff attend events. We will try and keep this to a minimum and appreciate your patience with this transition.

Have you ever thought, it would be nice to receive a text to remind you of all of the important dates for 4-H? Well, we are excited to say that we are now able to offer just that to you.

We would like to invite you to use “Remind” to help keep you informed. Remind is a free service that allows you to get messages directly to your phone. The best part about it is that joining our group is easy and only requires you to pick one of the options below.

4-H CAMP TIPS

4-H Camp is quickly approaching and we are all very excited to be attending! Here are some very helpful tips to make your camp experience a great one!

Pack Smart

Don't over pack. First, make sure you have all the essentials like toiletries--toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo & conditioner, sunscreen--and then focus on your clothes. Make sure you pack clothes and proper shoes that you can do outdoor activities in.  Even though camp will be held in June, evenings still do get cold so pack cold weather items also. Honestly, bring anything you don't mind getting dirty, but don't bring your entire closet to camp.  Make sure that all of your clothes are labeled with your name.

Participate In Activities

This is the perfect opportunity to step outside of your comfort zone. Whatever activities camp is offering that you know you can't or wouldn't dream of doing at home, do it. Life--like summer vacation--is too short not to!

Respect Your Cabin Mates' Space

This will be one of your earliest experiences with roommates and it'll be a huge eye opener. Keeping the peace in your cabin, is so important. As long as you respect everyone's, belongings everything should be smooth sailing.

Disconnect

We want you to experience camp to it’s fullest and it is hard to do that if you are glued to a device. So please don’t bring the following to camp with you: radios, CD players, IPOD, MP3, cell phones, etc.

Attitude

Bring a good attitude to camp! Camp is a excellent opportunity for you to meet new people from Southeastern Montana!

JULY 13-16, 2022– BOZEMAN, MT

What do you do at 4-H Congress?

  • BE A SUPER FRIENDduring social time like dances, teambuilding games and crowd-pleasing sessions with lots of laughs.
  • BE A SUPER COMPETITOR and participate in one of the 13 state level contests. If you are interested in competing make sure you are aware of your counties dates, deadlines and policies for participation in a state level contest. 
  • BE A SUPER LEARNER during the variety of hands on workshops delivered by MSU faculty, community organizations and other top-notch presenters giving you lots of ideas for your own future and how you can have an impact on your community.
  • BE A SUPER GIVERand give your hands to larger service by being part of a statewide service project giving back to those that have given to us.

FALLON COUNTY LIVESTOCK JUDGING CONTEST

Wednesday, June 1, 2022– Fallon County Indoor Barn

Registration:6:00 pm

Judging:6:30 pm

All 4-H and FFA youth are welcome! This judging will count as a County Event and participants do not have to be in a livestock  project.

Animal Quality Assurance (AQA) will be held each year in each county to be attended by first year 4-H and FFA members in market or breeding animal projects. The members must continue to complete the AQA requirement every other year to participate in livestock projects and show at the fair.

GOLDEN PITCHFORK CONTEST

This is an elite overall award that is given to individuals that have the highest score from 5 categories.

Guidelines:

  • Contest is open to 4-H & FFA Youth raising Market Beef, Sheep, Goat, Swine, Rabbit, and Poultry.
  • The 4-H /FFA member must have a score in each of the 5 areas.
  • Youth are encouraged to participate, but it is not required.
  • Youth can compete in all the projects they are enrolled in.
  • Youth must have met AQA requirements.

Scoring:

- LIVE MARKET SHOW PLACING– This must be the same animal that is entered in the animal performance contest and must be declared prior to any judging.

-ANIMAL PERFORMANCE (Beef, Goat, Sheep, Swine)- All animals will be placed by carcass ultrasound and ranked according to Montana Carcass Contest Guidelines.

-WRITTEN TEST (Rabbit and Poultry) - Test must be completed before the conclusion of fair. Tests will be given for three age categories. Test questions will be from the Fairbook, Animal  Quality Assurance, Project Manuals, and Record Books, Must receive a 80 % or better.

- SHOWMANSHIP PLACING- Additional points will be awarded to those that win the Round Robin Showmanship contest.

-INDOOR FAIR EXHIBIT- Exhibit must be on project area.  Additional points will be given to those that complete project interviews and win a Champion of Champions Award in Fallon County.

- RECORD BOOKS -Evaluations cannot be done by youth’s 4-H leader or parent, and will be reviewed by Extension. Record books must be turned in on time, late record books will not be evaluated. Record books must be deemed complete.
