Problem Solving | Math Models to Solve Problems
Fred Peck, Mary Alice Carlson; Math Models
Virtually Broadcasting – Thursday July 9 @ 1:00 PM
The coronavirus pandemic has put mathematical modeling in the headlines. Every day
we see new and
revised numbers and new ideas about what will keep us safe, but what goes into making
predictions
about how diseases spread? In this session, we will use computer simulation to explore
the
mathematics behind the numbers and see how models can inform decisions that make a
difference in
all our lives.
IPYA | Cultural Stories
Elvis Leyian, Emma Limon en, Stephanie Davison
Virtually Broadcasting – Wednesday July 8 @ 1:00 PM
Elvis from Kenya and Emma from Finland will share cultural information about their
respective
countries.
Or download the promotional video here.
Grazing | Differences in Digestion and Grazing in Livestock
Adriane Good
Virtually Broadcasting – Wednesday July 8 @ 3:00 PM and Thursday July 9 @ 3:00 PM
Ever wonder why cows graze the way they do? Or why your horse is constantly eating?
Why would a goat choose to eat thistles over grass? Why do pigs dig holes in their
pen all the time? What are chickens pecking at? This workshop will answer those questions
and talk about why our different 4-H project species graze the way they do, and the
differences in their digestive tracts that allow that to happen. We will use household
items (and candy!) to visualize their grazing behavior and digestive tracts.
Supplies: knee socks, shredded paper/sawdust/wood chips, licorice (or some sort of candy that is long and skinny, or celery/carrots), jelly beans/m&ms (or some sort of candy or dried fruit that is multi-colored), 2 clean rocks, yeast, sugar, water, empty water bottles, balloons.
Bees | A Virtual Tour of 4-H Beekeeping
Breton Homewood
Virtually Broadcasting – Wednesday July 8 @ 2:00 PM and Thursday July 9 @ 3:00 PM
I can show a video of me hiving bees, and talk about the importance of beekeeping
in Montana. I will also show ideas for how kids can get involved with bees through
4-H, via pollinator gardens, building mason beehives, and building a cheap bee hive.
Video | Stories Through Photos
James Joyce
Virtually Broadcasting – Wednesday July 8 @ 3:00 PM
As visual literacy becomes increasingly vital, understanding how pictures interact
with each other becomes necessary. Learn how to plan, photograph, and share your photos
to tell mini-stories in three consecutive shots. No, you don’t need to be on Instagram
or any other social media platform for this workshop! Yes, the presentation works
as a stand-alone experience as well as an introduction to filmmaking.
MontanaPBS Sports | Live Television Production
Duncan Williamson and Scott Sterling
Virtually Broadcasting – Thursday July 9 @ 2:00 PM
This workshop will allow participants the opportunity to learn what it takes to put
on a live television production, with specific examples in live sports. Students will
hear from Scott Sterling, the Director of Production at MontanaPBS, and Duncan Williamson,
Producer for video board and streaming for Montana State Athletics.
Wool | The Wonders of Wool
MSU Wool Lab
Virtually Broadcasting – Wednesday July 8 @ 1:00 PM
A live broadcast from the wool lab showcasing wool’s amazing properties, how and where
wool is produced and how it’s analyzed and judged.
Design Thinking | An Introduction to Getting Unstuck
Mani Stubbs
Virtually Broadcasting – Wednesday July 8 @ 1:00 PM
In a fast-paced, ever-changing world, making sense of the many career options available
can be confusing. How do you choose the “right” career path? What do you do if you
feel stuck in this process? To solve these types of problems, you can apply Design
Thinking to brainstorm, build prototypes, and test careers as you shape your purpose,
passion, and a life you love. In this workshop, we will complete the “30 Circles”
exercise to learn about “getting unstuck” as part of the Design Thinking process.
