Academic Year Start - Meetings and Events

Each department conducts a one-day retreat before the beginning of the semester, required for all faculty.  Contact your department head for details and agenda.

  • EHHD College Retreat - contact the Dean's office staff for details and agenda.
  • EHHD New Faculty Success & Productivity Program - Sponsored by the EHHD Office of Scholarship Development and Academic Impact, this program was initiated Fall 2019. The program consists of monthly meetings with various college mentors to discuss a range of topics, in part generated by the group.

    • Brightspace Login -

      D2L Brightspace is the learning platform used by Montana State University.  For all tools necessary for teaching go to the university web page www.montana.edu.  Click on Faculty & Staff in the black bar across the top left corner.  Here is a link to directly log in into D2L: https://ecat1.montana.edu/

      From this page you can access your email, D2L, MyInfo - the portal which houses your employee information (time sheet, pay stub) as well as your faculty information (course list, course schedule, etc.), and the Schedule of Classes.

    • Instructors use D2L to post, at the very least, the syllabus and all course readings (not a textbook). However, you can also use it as your gradebook and students can submit their assignments electronically through this platform. If you are teaching a blended course this is where you would operate the online component to the course. If you are not teaching blended or online, but would like to use the discussion posts you are welcome to do that. 

      Unless you are teaching blended or online, it is up to you how much or how little you want to use D2L.

    • Once you are assigned in the system to teach the course a shell will automatically be generated for you.

      You have to activate your course before students can see it. You do this by opening up D2L, finding your course and next to it there will be a pencil symbol, click on it and it will open up an editing page. You will need to check the box that says Active (Make course active).

    •  Brightspace Support -

      • The campus Brightspace team is very friendly and helpful – feel free to contact them (or take one of their courses) for any help you might need using the system.

  • eLearning & Innovation - ATO offers abundant resources to help you improve your on-line teaching.  E-learning courses also can help you develop responsive and visually stunning learning experience for students.  ATO also offers collaboration tools such as WebEx videoconferencing.
  • Continuing, Professional & Lifelong Learning - ATO also offers various personal enrichment programs.
    • The Office of Outreach & Engagement offers assistance with classroom or other off-campus collaborations, and periodically invites applications for mini-grants to develop collaborations.  The office can assist with "Broader Impacts" requirements for NSF grants, for example.

  • CatCard - Your MSU ID card; your after-hours building key; also can be used to pay for food around campus
  • Keys - Talk to your BOM about getting you your office and workroom/seminar room keys.  You will pick up keys at the Plew building (6 th. Ave. and Grant Street).
  • Parking - Buy your permit through MyInfo.  Parking is monitored through electronic surveillance of your license plate.  Avoid getting a ticket!  Read the Parking Regulations.
  • Telephone/Voicemail - If you have trouble with your telephone set-up or connection, contact Trey Shipman, 994-3555.

University Information Technology

  • UIT is your link for help with email, other software they support (e.g., Microsoft Office, NVivo, EndNote, SPSS, Adobe, WebEx), computer hardware support, access to classroom technology, phone system requests, software and hardware purchasing, and more (http://www.montana.edu/uit/ or http://www.montana.edu/uit/facultystaff/index.html) or you can e-mail support request to ehhdithelp@montana.edu or you can get in-person support at the walk-in location in the MSU Library Commons. The HelpDesk is open Mon - Fri, 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. (excluding holidays & breaks)  The general HELP line is 994-1777.  Brightspace has its own support staff (http://www.montana.edu/ecat/help/).

    Email

    Once you have a contract an email address is generated for you. Your MSU email will most likely be first.last@montana.edu.  You can change your preferred email in MyInfo; however MSU does prefer you to use your montana.edu email for work communications.  Keeping your Outlook Calendar up to date will assist with scheduling meetings, whether with your colleagues or committees.     Net ID and Logging on to the MSU Domain

    To log into the MSU domain, you will use a random ID generated especially for you.  This ID is used to log into computers at MSU (smart carts as well as your own), your MSU email, and the library, among others.  Please see the following link regarding IDs, passwords, and services from University Information Technology.  http://www.montana.edu/uit/ids-services/index.html. or http://www.montana.edu/uit/facultystaff/index.html. To set your NetID password Go to http://password.montana.edu, then read instructions to set up new user profile in Self-Service Password Portal, finally proceed to Password Portal to set NetID password.

    MyInfo

    Besides course information, MyInfo also allows access to personal information, employee services, faculty services, and parking services.  You can update personal information, turn in your time sheet, view advisees’ transcripts, etc.  Log into MyInfo with your GID and password; see directions below under “Getting Started with a Course.” You can also now login to MyInfo using your NetID.

    Security & Safe Computing

    Hackers and cyber evil-doers target individual computers to use as entry points to the university network. A compromised network puts all of MSU's research and the personal identification information of students, faculty and staff at risk. Keeping your computer safe is the first line of defense to protect everyone. For more information visit http://www.montana.edu/uit/safecomputing/. Be a good data steward. Understand MSU's different data classifications and store your data in the appropriate location. Refer to the Data Storage Security Grid for more information.

    Desktop/Laptop Security Software Requirements: All Devices connecting to the University network must be using a supported operating system for which security updates are still being released by the manufacturer. When a viable client exists, the following software packages must be installed and used on Desktops or laptops:
