- Students who successfully complete the program are eligible to sit for the national ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) exam. The BOC exam is recognized across the United States. As of November 2009, 11 states and one territory license laboratory personnel. These include: California, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Montana, Nevada, New York, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Puerto Rico. The other states do not require state licenses for laboratory practitioners. In order to get a state license, an individual must have successfully passed the BOC exam and fill out the necessary paperwork as required by the individual state’s licensing board.
