Chapter 33 will pay a percentage of your tuition and normal fees for courses that meet degree requirements in your educational program on file with the MSU Office of Veteran Services. The percentage is based on the time you spent on active duty after September 10, 2001. The percentage will vary from 40% to 100%
If you withdraw from or stop attending classes, you will be required to pay back the tuition and fees for those classes to the VA. DO NOT withdraw from any class or classes without talking to someone at the MSU Veteran Support Center regarding the amount you will have to pay back to the VA.
You should be aware that the ultimate responsibility for the payment of tuition and fees is YOUR responsibility. You will not be allowed to register for or attend any further terms until all your financial obligations to the university for the current term are met.
In lieu of receiving your Certificate of Eligibility (remember to bring in that letter as soon as you receive it to Veteran Services office) MSU will certify you based on your report of applying for Chapter 33 benefits. In order to accurately report tuition and fees to MSU’s Student Accounts office, please check the percentage you estimate you are eligible for under Chapter 33 (this percentage is based on the months served on active duty for other than training purposes):

Under/over estimating could lead to adjustment of your bill to MSU when the VA submits your actual payment.
If you are receiving Federal Tuition Assistance, it is your responsibility to inform the Veteran Support Center. Tuition Assistance is applied towards your tuition and fees each semester before CH 33 funds. If you fail to inform the Veteran Support Center of your receipt of Tuition Assistance, the result could be an overpayment from the VA.
Housing Allowance:
You are only eligible for the Chapter 33 housing allowance if you are registered for 7 credits or more. (If you are ONLY registered for online courses the MHA rate is half the national average).
The amount of the housing allowance is paid based on the Bozeman zip code (59717) not on your home zip code.
If living in the Dorms: Dorms and meal plans are not covered within the tuition and fees. This is what the monthly housing allowance(MHA) is for.
Book Stipend:
The book stipend will be paid at the beginning of each term and will be based on your benefit percentage and the number of credit hours you are taking.
