The College of Letters and Science is pleased to open nominations for 2024 CLS Annual Faculty, Staff, and Student Awards. All award nominations must be received by 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, 2024.

Outstanding Teaching Award

Award description

The Outstanding Teaching awards recognize the immense contribution of our faculty – both tenure track and instructional - in our educational mission. These awards reaffirm our commitment to excellence in teaching, defined as “the set of activities performed by faculty that fosters student learning, critical and ethical thinking, problem solving, and creativity.” An award will be given to one TT and one NTT faculty member in each of the four categories:

  • Excellence in classroom and laboratory teaching
  • Excellence in teaching that enhances our University and College’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Excellence in mentorship at the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Excellence in teaching that speaks to our land grant mission, reaching out to the broader Montana community.

Nomination instructions:

To nominate, send an email with the subject line “Teaching Excellence in INSERT NAME OF CATEGORY” with the following compiled into one PDF to [email protected]

  • A nominating letter that names the category in which the nominee should be considered and provides evidence of excellence within that category
  • One to four letters of support, at least two of which should come from students
  • An up-to-date copy of the nominee’s CV
  • A statement of teaching philosophy and/or description of teaching practices and innovations from the nominee
  • Any other evidence of outstanding teaching that will help the committee see why the nominee should be considered within the nominated category
  • A statement of support from the Department Head if nominating letter was written by another faculty member or committee

Meritorious Research/Creativity Award

Award description

The Letters and Science Meritorious Research/Creativity Award honors faculty annually for especially significant research or creative achievement. The nomination may be prompted by a single, especially significant research or creative achievement, or by a recent body of work, either of which should be the product of extensive, mature research or creative activity.  Awards will be made based on the significance and lasting effect of the nominee’s work and on the broad impact or recognition of their achievement. Please make special note if the research speaks to our land grant mission, enhances DEI efforts or visibility, and/or speaks to University Strategic Goals. One award will be given to a tenure track faculty member from Letters, and one to a tenure track faculty member from Science.

Nomination instructions:

To nominate, send an email with the subject line “Meritorious Research/Creativity Award” with the following compiled into one PDF to [email protected]

  • a nominating letter that addresses the significance and impact of the nominee’s research/creative achievement
  • an up-to-date copy of the nominee’s CV
  • 1-2 letters of support written by faculty who are not members of the nominee’s department or center
  • a statement of support from the Department Head if nominating letter was written by another faculty member or committee

Excellence in Integration Award

Award description

This award recognizes faculty members who are outstanding in teaching (including mentorship), scholarship and creativity, and outreach, and who have demonstrated engagement of students in valuable learning processes that integrate successes in teaching, outreach, and research activities. One award will be given to a tenure track faculty member from Letters, and one to a tenure track faculty member from Science.

Eligibility and Stipulations

  • Eligible nominees must be full-time L & S tenure-track faculty
  • Any L&S tenure-track faculty may nominate an individual for this award; however faculty members may not nominate themselves

Nomination instructions:

To nominate, send an email with the subject line “Integration Award” with the following compiled into one PDF to [email protected]:

  • a letter of nomination not to exceed two pages to include evidence of sustained performance of teaching excellence, explanation of significant research accomplishments, and evidence of the integration of the two in valuable learning experiences for students at all levels
  • a current copy of the nominee’s curriculum vitae
  • a statement of support of the nomination from the department head if the nomination letter comes from another faculty member or committee
  • (not required) any supporting materials, including statements from those outside the department of the impact of the nominee’s research, statements from community members of impact, and/or supporting letters from undergraduate or graduate students.

Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant

Award description
